Despite an acquittal on an illegal online gambling charge former Florida State quarterback Adrian McPherson's chances of returning to college sports are bleak. That is according to Charles Ehrhardt, chairman of the FSU Athletic Board.
Ehrhardt, believes the NCAA, which polices intercollegiate sports, still could decide to bar McPherson from playing: 'I don't know what the NCAA will do, but I think that they could still find that he committed prohibited behavior.'
And Bill Saum, the National Collegiate Athletic Association's top anti-gambling official, backs him up: 'We don't know all the facts in the McPherson situation, but just because something goes through the court system, it wouldn't end our review of the information.”
The NCAA has cracked down on gambling, especially in recent years. A bylaw prohibits players from gambling on sports, including Internet gambling on sporting events. And a student-athlete who violates the rule is ineligible to play in intercollegiate competition.
According to the NCAA Web site the association: '... opposes all forms of legal and illegal sports wagering. Sports wagering has the potential to undermine the integrity of sports contests. ...” Looks like the NCAA could permanently end McPherson’s hopes of a professional career.
